SHIFT Lunch and Learn with Ka Collective

SHIFT's February Learning Community Showcase will highlight the work of two SHIFT-supported initiatives that create opportunities for their community members to come together to make art. They will discuss the power of art-making to break isolation, forge connection, and open possibilities for challenging the systemic barriers to their communities' well-being.

Ka Collective, an initiative of Kapwa Centre, is a group of Filipino/a/x artists living and working in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. They find support and solidarity through the Filipino value of Kapwa, honoring each person’s artistic practice while harmonizing with each other through shared processes and principles. Through monthly artist gatherings and community art-making workshops, they open spaces of connection to self, community and culture.

Homes or Hostility?

  • SHIFT Space, Concordia University Library Building (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

This panel will address critical issues surrounding homelessness and cohabitation in urban spaces, with a focus on Montreal. Beginning the discussion by unpacking the stigma and discrimination faced by the homeless community, our panel of experts will illuminate how public discourse can uphold harmful or misguided beliefs, perpetuating unease around cohabitation. Panelists will then explain how this tension manifests both in the form of our built environment, with hostile urban planning techniques such as anti-homeless architecture, and in our political environment, with blame and responsibility shifted or evaded in the name of capitalist interests. The goal of this panel is not only to illuminate the complexity of unhoused people’s experiences, revealing the importance of compassion for social cohesion, but also to explore how root causes of the housing crisis can be tackled to pave the way for a revolutionary tomorrow which sees housing justice for all.

  • SHIFT Space, Concordia University Library Building (map)

A parol is a craft resembling a star-shaped lantern. For Filipina/o/xs, making parols and hanging them outside their windows symbolize the victory of light over darkness as well as their shared expression of faith, hope, and goodwill during the holiday season.

We kindly ask for a minimum donation of $10. First-come first-served basis for the first 30 people to register for the parol making. We will send a confirmation email to the first 30 registrants. Everyone can still join, enjoy the festive vibes and food, and watch the creativity unfold without making a parol.

Kapwa Movie Nights is back for Filipino Heritage Month!

This initiative by @martinthomasdufresne started last month with Asian Heritage Month, with the goal of presenting films made by Asian and Filipino filmmakers.

This is a way to celebrate the creativity within our community, for our stories deserve to be told and put forward, and to expand our perception of movies beyond the mainstream western media by promoting Asian cinema.

For Filipino Heritage Month this June, we will be screening CLEANERS (2019) directed by Glenn Barit.
